Hi, I’m Becca, founder of Next Draft Publishing, an independent publishing imprint based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I believe the best books don’t simply tell us a story. They give us a new way to see our own.
I also believe good stories take time to develop—and that finding the right path to publication can be deeply personal, surprisingly confusing, and, at times, downright exhausting.
I know because I’ve been there.

My own publishing journey began in 2004, when I started putting my books on FictionPress.com. A few years later, I self-published a book through Lulu.com simply to get copies into the hands of friends and family. Eventually, I pursued traditional publishing with two more novels, working with agents and exploring independent publishing options along the way.
The journey taught me something I didn’t expect: rejection can make you a better writer. It can make you more patient, more persistent, and more hungry to improve. But it also introduced me to an uncomfortable truth.
I began meeting extraordinary writers whose books were getting turned away—not because the stories weren't good, but because the traditional publishing system simply couldn't make room for them. Writers would hear, “This is amazing!” from an agent, only to be ghosted. Beautiful, complex, deeply human stories were sitting on hard drives, waiting for a chance to fly.
I started wondering: Why does getting a great book into the world have to be so complicated?
And when it came to my own books, I realized something else. No book will ever be perfect. I could rewrite the same manuscript until the day I die. But eventually, some stories are simply aching to be released.
That realization led me back to self publishing—something I once promised myself I would never do again. But publishing has changed dramatically in the past twenty years. The tools have changed. The technology has changed. And authors have more options than ever. The problem is that more options don't necessarily make the process easier.
You can try to navigate traditional publishing. You can take on the cost and complexity of running your own publishing business. You can pay for a hybrid model that may not fit your needs. Or you can spend countless hours Googling, researching, comparing, and trying to figure out what you're actually supposed to do next.
I believe there is another way.
Next Draft Publishing exists to give authors another option: a thoughtful, transparent publishing partnership that helps you get your book into the world without giving up your voice, your rights, your profits, or your sanity.
If you've written a great book—one you've taken the time to create, revise, vet, and polish—bring it to us.
We'll wrap the right team around you. We'll talk about your goals, your budget, your strategy, and your book. We'll help you navigate the pieces that feel overwhelming and make thoughtful decisions about the ones that matter most.
You don't have to spend your nights Googling publishing questions.
You don't have to ask ChatGPT what you should do next.
We've been there. We know the landscape. And we're here to help you navigate it.
So that eventually, you can look at your book, your publishing plan, and the story you've worked so hard to tell and simply say: I’ve got this.
